Journey to Better: Compostable Mailers

Recently we announced on our Eco & Ethics page our ongoing "Journey to Better" mission, which will see us making ongoing improvements in sustainability and ethics in all areas of our business in order to continually improve our products, suppliers and approach to an even more conscious level!

In this Journey to Better update, we want to share with you our move towards more sustainable packaging with these fabulous compostable mailers we now use to send our products to you*.

The clever little eco-friendly comPOST Packs are made from 100% biodegradable and compostable materials; corn starch, PLA (synthesised from corn) and PBAT (Polybutyrate Adipate Terephthalate). PLA (Polylactide) is a bio-based, biodegradable material made from renewable plant material (starches such as corn husks, rice straw and wheat straw).

While the materials used to form comPOST Packs are 100% biodegradable and compostable, they are not however 100% renewable as the PBAT component of the packs is made from petroleum-based materials. However, this combination of materials represents a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional plastics, is non-toxic and contains no Phthalate or Bisphenol A (BPA).

The most sustainable option for end users once finished with a comPOST Pack is to put it in with their food scraps and garden waste. They will break down within 90* days in a compost environment in a non-toxic process. Yes, they’re fine in worm farms and will be broken down in a bokashi too

According to the supplier "The Better Packaging Co. believe that as a society we have to make a fundamental shift in the way we value resources and move from a ‘linear economy’ (make, use, dispose) to a ‘circular’ one. In a Circular Economy, resources are kept in use for as long as possible, the maximum value is extracted from them whilst in use, and at the end of the product’s service life, materials are recovered and regenerated from it.

We design products that come as close to this ideal as possible – waste products are used as their raw materials, minimal waste (and pollution) is generated in their production and at the end of their useful life they can be recycled or regenerated."

We wholeheatedly agree with this sentiment and are committed to sustainability too, so we are constantly working towards minimising our impact, not only in our products, their manufacture but also the way we present and deliver them, so these compostable bags are just one small step forward in that journey. Follow us for more important steps in our "Journey to Better" initiative in the coming months!
